Business Operating Systems

Most companies run on an operating system nobody designed.

I'm Blair Boylan. I help businesses see how work actually moves — the value streams, workflows, data, interfaces, and decision points between strategy and software — and turn that into an operating system they can run, see, and trust.

It's the thinking behind the operating model and pre-sales engine I built to scale one firm's services revenue from $1.5M to $9.2M in three years.

The idea

When no one designs it, the business pays for it.

Every company already runs on an operating system. It just assembled itself, out of the tools each team bought, the spreadsheets that quietly do the real work, the recurring meetings that carry what the software doesn’t, and the few people who know which jobs to babysit. No one drew it, so no one owns it.

That unowned layer is where execution breaks. Work stalls between teams. Ownership blurs at the handoffs. Nobody can say where a piece of work is without asking someone. The strategy is sound and the software is fine. The space between them is doing the damage.

A Business Operating System is that same layer, made deliberate: the value streams, the workflows, the data moving through them, the interfaces people work in, and the points where a person has to validate. Named, structured, and owned instead of improvised. That is the layer I design. Here is how I break it down.

Proof

I've built this layer, not just written about it.

The thinking above came out of operating it. Most recently as Chief Strategy Officer, building the operating model and the team that ran it.

AI orchestration

AI-enabled delivery workflows

Built AI workflows for intake synthesis, advisory engagement preparation, and compliance evidence generation. The same pattern now powers Oso Group's internal delivery system.

Business Operating System

Designed advisory offerings around the model

Built Technology Assessments, Product-Market Fit assessments, and custom Analysis of Alternatives engagements that reduced decision ambiguity for clients before any code was written.

Operating model

Scaled services revenue 6x

Designed and operationalized PADRE (Pipeline, Acquire, Deliver, Run, Extend), the customer-centric GTM operating model that took Nymbl's services revenue from $1.5M to $9.2M in three years.

Executive scaling

Scaled team from 5 to 75+ FTEs & contractors

Co-led Nymbl's organizational scale from 5 to 75+ FTEs and contractors as a core member of the executive team, designing the recruitment pipeline, delivery roles, and governance models to support 6x services revenue growth.

Hands-on architecture

Workflow-heavy applications across industries

Architected and delivered custom applications in healthcare, financial services, fintech, and logistics. Custom Node.js / TypeScript code combined with low-code platforms (Retool, Mendix, Replit).

Security & compliance

Owned SOC 2 Type II end-to-end

Led readiness, evidence, audit response, and the AI-assisted workflows that supported it. Unlocked sales into banks, credit unions, and other regulated enterprises.
